Nard Clabbers, TNO, will speak at Healthy Nutrition Conference, on June 26, during AgriFood Innovation Event in Venlo, The Netherlands.

Personalised nutrition can be seen as a technological innovation (wearables to track health, artificial intelligence, 3D food printers to make thé ultimate food for you, etc.) but it is a social innovation as well, or even more so. Knowing who you are giving advice to and what motivates these individuals to change their behaviour is often more complex than the coolest tech gadget.

Empowered consumers that are able to decide for themselves are at the basis of personalised nutrition. This level of empowerment, helped by modern technology and consumer platforms, can spread to other fields as well. The future is bright!

What drives you?

Working for a society where individuals have the power to be able to make good decisions for themselves and the world.

Why should the delegate attend your presentation?

Personalisation is the future of food as far as I can tell. In my presentation I will go into where we are in this field and where the future might bring us.

What emerging technologies/trends do you see as having the greatest potential in the short and long run?

Wearbale techology, sensors, internet of things and the digital infrastructure to use all the information are enablers but the biggest innovation needs to be on another level. Behavioural change is necessary for personalised nutrition to have an impact. This asks for a social innovation as well.

As a committed mountain bike racer, nutritionist, strategic thinker and a type 1 diabetic himself, Nard believes that measuring aspects of your health, knowing your behavior and using that information for personalized advice will be the future of food and healthcare. For the Dutch knowledge institute TNO, he has set up a large international research consortium together with Wageningen Research that investigates the technical and social innovations that will enable personalized nutrition through consumer empowerment. This pre-competitive public private consortium is unique in combining different scientific expertise across the whole value chain of personalized nutrition and using real world field labs.
