The Internet of Food & Farm 2020 (IoF2020) project investigates and fosters a large-scale implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) in the European farming and food sector. With a 30 million budget co-funded by the European Union, the project has the potential to bring a paradigm shift in this domain, by drastically improving productivity and sustainability. It will demonstrate the added value of smart webs of connected objects, that are context-sensitive and can be identified, sensed and controlled remotely in the agri-food sector. We have created a global food supply chain that allows people almost anywhere in the world to access all kinds of imported vegetables, fruits and processed goods. Everyday. It is impressive but it comes with a price. The sophisticated system filled with artificial fertilisers and preservatives is at the expense of nutrition and the environment. Today is estimated that the population might rise to 9.7 billion by 2050 and the UN estimates that we will need to produce 70% more food. Yet we already using 90% of all arable land in the world. We must find smarter ways to produce and distribute food in urban environments. And SPACE10 created The Farm, a lab to help us investigate alternatives for a better future. The Growroom: Urban Farm Pavilion Launched by Ikea’s Space10
The design for The Growroom, an urban farm pavilion that looks into how cities can feed themselves through food producing architecture, is now open source and available for anyone to use.
SPACE10 envision a future, where we grow our own food much more locally. To spark conversations about how we can bring nature back into our cities, grow our own food and tackle the rapidly increasing demand for significantly more food in the future, we teamed up with architects Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husum to create The Growroom. Standing tall as a spherical garden, it empowers people to grow their own food much more locally in a beautiful and sustainable way. Coop Italia has started using an anti-fraud electronic nose system to identify genuine – and fake – Italian olive oil through its aromatic digital print.
Since 2013, Coop Italia’s Laboratory in Casalecchio di Reno has been using techniques able to read the DNA of at-risk products (such as meat and fish) and then determining if ingredients correspond to those declared by the supplier.
